EU Votes Down Request to Debate Israel's Move in West Bank

(MENAFN) The European Parliament faced sharp criticism Monday after voting down a motion by the Left group to hold debate proceedings on Israel's expanded territorial authority in the occupied West Bank.

"Once again, the Parliament decided to turn a blind eye to violence in Palestine," the faction posted on US social media platform X.

The Left bloc attributed the debate's rejection to opposition from center-right and far-right parliamentary coalitions working in coordination.

European Parliament members are convening in Strasbourg Feb. 9-12 for plenary proceedings addressing EU affairs and global developments.

Sunday saw Israel's security cabinet authorize the reversal of legislation prohibiting land sales from Palestinians to Jewish buyers in the West Bank, alongside unsealing property ownership documentation and reassigning construction permitting powers in a Hebron settlement area from Palestinian municipal authorities to Israel's civil administration.

The directives additionally broaden Israeli regulatory jurisdiction and enforcement capabilities into zones designated as Area A and Area B, invoking alleged infractions involving unauthorized building activity, water resources and destruction of archaeological and environmental sites.

The expanded authority enables demolition operations and property confiscation of Palestinian holdings, including territories under the civil and security governance of the Palestinian Authority.

The International Court of Justice ruled Israel's occupation of Palestinian land unlawful in a historic July 2024 advisory opinion, demanding complete settlement evacuations from the West Bank and East Jerusalem.

Israel has escalated military campaigns throughout the West Bank since initiating its war on the Gaza Strip in October 2023, encompassing lethal force, detentions, forced population transfers and settlement construction—actions Palestinians assert are designed to facilitate formal annexation of occupied lands.
